Telehouse Announces Launch of Telehouse data centers in UK and South Africa
March 23, 2010Telehouse EUROPE (President: Tokuji Mitsui), Telehouse’s European local subsidiary, will open Telehouse JOHANNESBURG in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa (referred to below as South Africa) on Wednesday March 24, 2010, and Telehouse LONDON Docklands West in London, UK, on Wednesday March 31, 2010, along with the launch of data center services based on Telehouse global standards.
Telehouse JOHANNESBURG will start providing services in the Isando district of Johannesburg, South Africa. With the launch of the facility, this will be the Telehouse Group’s second data center in Africa after Telehouse CAPE TOWN which opened in December 2009.
Demand for ICT solutions in Africa has grown in recent years as companies expand into the region and South Africa is steadily becoming the communications hub. By opening Telehouse JOHANNESBURG in the important commercial city of Johannesburg, Telehouse will strengthen its ICT operating base in the African market, which is expected to grow in the future.
Telehouse LONDON Docklands West is a large-scale data center with a total floor area of 19,000 square meters. The combined total floor area of Docklands West and the two existing buildings (North and East) on the same site amounts to 45,000 square meters, making it one of the largest data centers in Europe.
While the standard power supply per rack is 4KVA [1] to meet today’s need for high power consumption, consideration is also given to the environment. As well as acquiring ISO14001:2004 certification [2], waste heat generated by the data center is recycled to provide hot water free of charge to the neighboring area.
Since March 2008, the Telehouse Group has increased the number of its data centers to 17 sites in 11 cities spanning 9 regions globally and has multiplied the total floor area 1.6 times (to approximately 113,000 square meters), enabling the provision of high quality data centers to Japanese companies, overseas carriers and ISPs.

1. Telehouse JOHANNESBURG
(1) Features
Telehouse EUROPE will open Telehouse JOHANNESBURG in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa and location to many Japanese companies, and provide approximately 500 square meters of colocation service space to customers. The room temperature and humidity, electrical load environment and security by surveillance cameras in the newly erected data center building will be centrally controlled by Telehouse JOHANNESBURG. In addition to being prepared for any outbreak of disruption caused by power failure or lightning, the facility is equipped with various preventative equipment, including the latest fire and flood detection systems, to prevent unexpected problems, thus ensuring comprehensive security for ICT assets entrusted to the center by customers.
South Africa is a relay point for undersea cables off the western and eastern coasts of the African continent, and with the growing expansion of customers from Europe, the Middle East, India and Asia, the infrastructure is expected to be upgraded and strengthened. For this purpose, the Telehouse Group has opened two data centers, in Cape Town and Johannesburg, to address this demand. The two data centers will also meet the demand for BCP [1] and DR [2] within South Africa itself.
[1] BCP is an acronym for Business Continuity Plan and refers to establishing business procedures in order to continue or recover operations in the event of a disaster such as an earthquake. In particular, the plan covers issues such as verifying the safety of employees, ensuring backup systems and necessary personnel, and securing alternative offices.
[2] DR is an acronym for Disaster Recovery and refers to measures to protect data and systems in the event of unexpected problems caused by phenomena such as earthquakes and fires.

Customer equipment is installed on 19-inch racks provided by Telehouse, with individual locking and power-supply circuits.
Cage co-location service
For customers requiring higher security, cage-enclosed spaces are provided.
2) Optional services
Customer equipment monitoring and maintenance services
Telehouse provides support services for confirming the status of the customer’s equipment and changing and storing backup tapes on instructions from the customer.
ICT services
A variety of one-stop services to meet the customer’s needs can be provided.

2. Telehouse LONDON Docklands West
(1) Features
Telehouse LONDON Docklands West is a large-scale data center consisting of nine floors with a total floor area of 19,000 square meters.
Telehouse EUROPE, as the pioneer of the data center business, established its first site (North) in Docklands in 1990, its second site (Metro) in central London in 1997 and its third site (East) in Docklands in 1999. Bringing together the major internet exchanges in Europe and used by over 300 telecommunications carriers, Docklands serves as one the biggest network bases in Europe.
The fourth site (West) is connected with the existing sites (North and East) and has been designed and built to cutting-edge equipment specifications. Security, power, ventilation and technical support are provided by a highly reliable system.
In cooperation with KDDI Europe, Telehouse LONDON Docklands West integrates data center services with network, solutions and outsourcing business for customers.
(2) Service description
1) Private space colocation service For customers requiring a more secure environment, private rooms measuring approximately 20 square meters can be provided. Temporary maintenance services and power are included in the package charges.
2) Shared space colocation service
Open space is provided by rack unit for customers to install their own racks. Power and temporary maintenance support are also provided.
