Disaster Preparedness: Staten Island Chamber of Commerce
March 2, 2016It’s not always a major event that causes a disaster
When you think of a disasters that can take a business down, most people think of events like Hurricane Sandy, which devastated much of the East Coast including Staten Island. But more often, it’s a local event that brings operations to a halt. Disaster preparedness can play a crucial role in disaster recovery.
Ironically, a cigarette carelessly flicked by a passing pedestrian started a fire at the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce in September 2015. Linda Baran, the Chamber CEO, was at home when the alarm went off. She raced to the scene. When she arrived, the fire department had put out the blaze, but smoke was still pouring from their building.
No one was hurt, but the damage from the water used to put out the fire made the offices unusable.
Lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy helped with disaster preparedness
Fortunately the lessons learned from Sandy taught the Chamber that data backup was essential to Disaster Recovery, and this enabled their staff to continue operations immediately from remote locations.
Having a workspace was the next priority. One of the chamber members offered Linda a temporary space to operate from but they still needed to find something to get them through the long haul.
Their answer came at a Before Business Breakfast hosted by Telehouse, a member of the Chamber, a week later. Telehouse had 1100 feet of space in The Teleport that suited their needs perfectly. Problem solved.
Linda signed a lease and the chamber moved in at the Telehouse facility on 7 Teleport, where they will remain until the offices are restored.
